DaVinci Kalani 4-in-1 Greenguard Gold Certified Crib.
Q: What does a Greenguard certification mean?
A: In the words of Greenguard.org:
“Simply put, GREENGUARD Certification ensures that a product has met some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into indoor air.”
Q: What are VOC’s?
A: VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compound. VOC is a broad classification that encompasses many substances. Keep in mind that VOC’s are:
- Volatile: Meaning they evaporate (Or turn into gas) at room temperature. In other words, if a VOC is sitting in an open container in your room it will make it’s way into the air of the room quickly.
- Often Harmful: Although not always, many VOC’s are harmful chemicals and since they readily evaporate into the air of your room it’s a good idea to limit the amount of VOC’s present in your house.
Q: What does low VOC mean?
A: Low VOC means a product which typically contains VOC’s has had the amount of VOC’s reduced. There are not set guidelines to what may be advertised as Low VOC so Greenguard certification is a better marker to look for.
Q: What is the difference between a Greenguard Certification and Greenguard Gold?
A Greenguard Certification means that a given product meets certain emission guidelines set out in government standards. It’s a bit technical but if you want you can read more here.
Greenguard Gold has a even higher standards. According the Greenguard.org:
“The GREENGUARD Gold standard includes health based criteria for additional chemicals and also requires lower total VOC emissions levels to ensure that products are acceptable for use in environments such as schools and healthcare facilities. In addition to limiting emissions of more than 360 VOCs and total chemical emissions, GREENGUARD Gold Certified products must also comply with requirements of the State of California’s Department of Public Health “Standard Method for the Testing and Evaluation of Volatile Organic Chemical Emissions from Indoor Sources Using Environmental Chambers, Version 1.1 (2010)” (also known as California Section 01350). Office Furniture products that are GREENGUARD Gold Certified are also compliant with the BIFMA X7.1 standard and BIFMA e3 credits 7.6.1, 7.6.2, and 7.6.3.”
This means that products with Greenguard Gold certifications have the absolute lowest emissions and are safe for use with children.
Greenguard Ceritifed & Greenguard Gold Cribs.
Bearing in mind what we just learned about VOC’s and Greenguard certifications it makes a lot of sense to want these features in a crib- the place your child is going to spend half their life.
Not all cribs are made with VOC’s in mind, and it’s not easy to get a hold of VOC counts for all the sealants, paints and glues used in the manufacturing of a crib. That’s why Greenguard certifications are so handy.
