It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and with Christmas comes toy shopping for the little ones.
Our eldest son is just a couple months away from turning two and we’ve been combing through reviews and resources (And toy aisles, and friend’s toy bins) to find the best toy options for 2 year olds.
When we review kid’s toys we use the following categories:
Safety Represents the most important factor in all our research. If it’s not safe, we won’t recommend it, ever.
We don’t necessarily think quality is the be-all-end-all of kids toys. After all, these are toys for your kid to throw around and chew on, they’re not a car or television set. We don’t exactly require that toys have handcrafted by the Amish levels of craftsmanship. We just look for signs of reasonable quality.
This is hard to judge, but we try to do our best to take into account the amount of fun a toy would provide for most children. Brownie points for being unique.
This is more for mom and dad. We give bonus points to toys that improve your kid’s skills, or are education in some way.
Without further ado:
Top 10 Best Toys For 2 Year Olds.
10. Little Tikes Trampoline.
Our little man is in gymnastics and he loves this trampoline. It’s a fantastic way for him to burn off some steam, although we beg to differ on it giving mom a break. We all know that playing doesn’t count unless mom is watching.
The stability bar is well padded since you know your little one is going to smack their noggin on it at least a dozen times a day. The outer rim is well padded also and the construction is surprisingly solid.
Definitely a great pick, especially if your little one enjoys athletics. Or if you want a good alternative to TV.
9. Click N’ Play Gigantic Keyboard.
I know, I know, no best toys for 2 year olds list would be complete without an annoying sound toy, but oh man is this thing fun!
There’s just nothing better than seeing your little one stomping around giggling with excitement at making music with their feet.
It works like a charm, didn’t have any dead notes that many of these floor keyboards have. The notes were quite nice and intonation was good.
Surprisingly you can also play multiple notes at once (Chords) with it, which is actually even fun for me and mama.
Only thing to be aware of is it’s surprisingly loud volume at the highest setting. Like any toddler toy with sound it can be annoying.
Also a good way to start building interest in music for your child. As a musician myself I am always trying to foster the musical development of our children.
8. Banana Balance Bike.
It may sound crazy, getting a bike for your 2 year old, but it’s really not too early for them to start learning the preliminary skills involved.
Bicycling is a vital life skill for a lot of people. It offers an excellent way to get around without polluting the Earth, and while maintaining physical fitness.
And… well… it’s like riding a bike- You only have to learn it once.
This Banana bike has a nice low design which allows your kid to maintain their stability very nicely.
Don’t forget to buy a helmet along with it. Seriously helmets are an absolute must for bicycling.
7. Micro Mini 2-Go Deluxe Scooter.
Hey, what’s a scooter doing in a list of the best toys for 2 year olds? Well this is a special kind of scooter.
If this isn’t just about the coolest new kids toy to come out lately, I don’t know what is.
It’s a scooter, but it starts off as a sit-down “scoocher” and grows up with your kid. Eventually you take the set off and it turns into a standup scooter.
Great for kids to play with, get around with, and eventually learn a nifty skill with.
Very well constructed and has a sort of a modern-retro European look to it that will definitely turn heads.
Makes a great gift, for all you Christmas shoppers.
6. InStep Firetruck Pedal Car.
This is similar to the scooter, but it’s more style over substance.
If your little one is like my son, they will love having their own firetruck. There’s nothing cooler really to a young man than playing at fireman.
Everything on this has a nice vintage look and surprisingly quality craftsmanship.
Only downside, you do have to assemble it.
5. Melissa & Doug Pounding Bench.
Like most parents you probably find your child hitting and pounding on all manner of things she probably shouldn’t. Instead of a straight jacket, might we recommend this nifty toy.
It’s like whack-a-mole at home, and made out of wood!
It’s truly a good time for your little one. It gives them something okay to let their frustrations out on. It’s well built and colorful.
Only caveat, you are arming your little warlord with a hammer, so be aware of that.
4. Dr. Seuss Book Collection.
How did a bookset find it’s way onto our best toys for 2 year olds list?
I mean, there’s not much more for us to add to this. It’s Dr. Seuss.
My older son is in love with Green Eggs & Ham (The book, not the dish). He even quotes it while we grocery shop.
These are absolute classics that you can be sure will be a hit.
Not to mention all the benefits of reading to your child.
3. Lincoln Logs!
Yes! Lincoln logs are the best!
These are like building blocks, but designed after the way tree timbers were shaped to make log cabins in the “pioneer days.”
I have such fantastic memories of building cabins with my brother with these babies back in the day.
Fantastic old school toy. Simple, fun, educational and creative.
You just can’t go wrong with Lincoln logs.
2. Play-Doh 36 Pack.
I’m saving all the classics for last here.
Play-Doh is timeless. Like Legos, or cardboard boxes every kid you know has played with play-doh.
This set is a great deal and comes with 36 colors for your kid to get creative with.
1. Alex Jr. Activity Cube.
There’s no better toy for a 2 year old than an activity cube.
You remember these from the waiting room at the doctor’s office right? They were the best part!
Make your house as fun as a waiting room, without the shots.
My wife and I bought one of these for the boys and our eldest loves it (Little brother is still too young).
Nice array of activities to complete, and it’s small and easily stows away when they’re done.
