We have sneak peek ultrasound tests on our mind since we did a write up on sneak peek gender accuracy recently. There we revealed just how accurate sneak peek gender DNA tests really are.
This got us thinking, what other options do people have for getting a sneak peek at their baby, and how do they stack up?
Today we’re comparing two of the more popular options for early gender detection: Sneak Peek DNA testing, and sneak peek ultrasound in 3d or 4d.
What is Sneak Peek Ultrasound?
Ultrasounds are conducted using high frequency sound waves which travel through a body and bounce back to the receiver. This works a lot like a radar, only at much higher frequencies.
Sneak peek ultrasounds use multiple angles of sound generation and advanced software to generate a 3d rendering in high definition of the fetus inside the womb.
4d ultrasounds are a bit of a gimmicky way of saying a 3d ultrasound that is in video form. Basically the 4th dimension is time, so a 4d ultrasound moves– IE Video.
While many mothers use 3d/4d ultrasound for the joy of seeing their little one in greater definition before birth, sneak peek ultrasound is also able to detect gender earlier in the pregnancy.
How Soon Can I Determine the Gender of my Baby?
For regular ultrasounds it’s typically possible at 18-20 weeks.
For most sneak peek ultrasounds, the earliest that gender can be predicted is 15 weeks. This gives an advance of about 3-5 weeks over regular ultrasound, but puts it well behind the 7 week cutoff for Sneak Peek DNA tests.
At this time, there is no method that can detect gender earlier than 7 weeks.
Sneak Peek DNA Test Accuracy.
As we detailed in our post on sneak peek gender accuracy, the at-home DNA test is as much as 100% accurate in the lab and should be 99% accurate at home with proper use.
There is some speculation that the test is not that accurate, but we think this is more likely due to operator error. After all, most people don’t have a clean-room in their home and are not familiar with how easy DNA can be contaminated.
Sneak Peek Ultrasound Accuracy.
Sneak peek ultrasound is a highly accurate gender test. It’s difficult to put a number to as it tends to be more or less 100% or 0%. Either your operator is able to determine the gender with full confidence, or the test will be inconclusive.
Sneak peek ultrasounds are great for bonding and seeing your little one’s face earlier than ever before, but we have to give the advantage to Sneak Peek DNA tests overall.
You can’t beat the lower price, high accuracy and ability to perform the test from home.
There’s no reason not to use both methods however, and we do suggest 3d or 4d ultrasound when possible as it improves bonding between mother and child before delivery.
